Gilding

GILDING

Origin: Over 2000 Years Ago

Gilding is a technique for applying a very thin layer of gold (or other precious metals like platinum or silver) to surfaces such as metal, porcelain, or glass. The process for gilding glass is particularly complex and difficult; only a handful of artisans in the Czech Republic possess the necessary skills. After the metal is liquefied with acid and applied to the surface with a fine brush, each glass is fired in a kiln heated to approximately 460° C (about 860° F).

Although gilded pieces must be engraved with much finer detail than non-gilded items, which requires additional labor time, they evoke a sense of elegance and luxury that is truly unique.
