A Baroque storefront in Prague's Staré Město, the Artĕl flagship boutique is a destination for unique and sparkling finds. What else would you expect from an individual with such a keen instinct for the “truly fabulous?” Opening the store was the logical next step for American Karen Feldman - designer, business owner, author and shopping aficionado. But, that is not to say she has forgotton her humble beginnings.
In 1998, Feldman established Artĕl Glass, a luxury crystal firm based in Prague. The small company (originally operated out of Feldman's apartment) has since achieved remarkable global success with its unique combination of fresh, inspired designs and traditional craftsmanship. It continues to fill a distinct niche in a timeworn industry, offering pieces that are once whimsical and elegant — and that deliver the quality expected from the most highly skilled Czech artisans.
What began as a strictly a wholesale business expanded dramatically in 2007, when Feldman added author and retailer to her resume. She drew on her experience living in Prague, as well as her finely honed shopping skills, to write the self-published guidebook, Prague: Artĕl Style, in May 2007. Offering detailed information from an insider‘s perspective (with a focus on Czech-made products), the guide garnered instant acclaim.
Feldman (then deemed "the pied piper of the Prague retail scene" by journalist Craig Kellogg) took her next professional leap by opening the flagship store in November 2007. Beneath the boutique's vaulted ceilings, you'll find an extensive collection of Artĕl crystal, alongside antique books, jewelry and an assortment of found objects — from Bohemian textiles and handmade ceramics to cheeky and absurd finds (that simply must be seen to be believed.)
The store is a showcase for — and testament to — Feldman's love of unusual yet functional design. Up next? A second store, in the lobby of the Mandarian Oriental, Prague.
